Every year I get a bunch of calls - mostly from family members - who ask me to help them with their brackets. They know I love college basketball and will be glad to share my picks.
Of course my picks usually begin and end with "pick the UConn women". Choosing on the men's side is much harder. Or even impossible. But I try.
This year, as you can see in a previous post, I picked Villanova as my winner. To get there, I decided to use a two-pronged filter. I looked for teams who graduate players on a regular basis and whose coaches represent what is right about college basketball (goodbye Kentucky, Maryland, Louisville).
So my picks were based on hunches and emotions. If, on the other hand, I decided to pick on a rational basis I would be more successful, right? If you think so, check out this analysis at Book of Odds.
So now I feel better about my choices, knowing they're as good as any. At the same time, I'm more likely to be hit by a waterspout than accurately predict the NCAA tournament. Can you believe it?
